The “Wait Your Turn” mentality kills leadership aspirations.

Many students believe leadership only begins in Year 6.

This creates a “skill vacuum” in which students enter their senior year with strong ambition but limited experience.

If you wait until their final year to train them, you waste four terms of potential growth and leave them feeling overwhelmed by their new responsibilities.

Here are five activities you can implement immediately to begin building your pipeline of student leaders.

1. Establish a shadowing program.

In the latter half of Term 1, pair Year 5 students with current Year 6 leaders for “on-the-job” training.

Let them stand beside the leaders during assembly setup or sit in on an SRC meeting.

This demystifies the roles and builds a sense of “succession.”

2. Create lunchtime ‘Pop-Up’ coordinators

Create “Micro-Leadership” roles that don’t require a badge. Invite Year 4 and 5 students to volunteer as “Equipment Managers” or “Game Referees” for one week at a time.

This allows them to practice managing peers in a low-stakes environment.

3. Use the ‘Big Idea’ suggestion box

Place a suggestion box in the middle/upper-school corridor specifically for Year 4s and 5s.

Once a month, hold a “Solution Circle” where these students discuss the suggestions and brainstorm ways to solve school problems.

It teaches them that leadership is about problem-solving, not just popularity.

4. Hold public speaking ‘Soapbox’ sessions

During class time, create a “Soapbox Friday” where students have 60 seconds to speak on a topic they care about—anything from “Why we should have more art” to “The best way to play handball.”

Building this “bravery muscle” early is essential for future captaincy applications.

5. Lead community service micro-projects

Encourage small groups of students to lead a mini-initiative, like a “Clean Up the Oval” Friday or a “Book Swap” morning.

By focusing on service rather than status, they learn that the best leaders are those who serve their community without needing a title.

Finally….

Leadership isn’t a light switch you flip on the first day of Year 6; it’s a slow-burning flame that needs to be tended earlier.

If you wait for the graduation to arrive before you start the training, you’ve already missed the high impact window.

By implementing these small shifts now, you aren’t just filling future vacancies—you’re cultivating a culture where responsibility is a habit rather than a surprise.

Start building that pipeline today, and ensure your future seniors step into their roles with the quiet confidence that only comes from being ready long before the badge arrives.

Many students work incredibly hard to be elected, only to find that once the badge is pinned on, they aren’t quite sure what to do with it.

Without a clear mission in Term 1, student leaders can become “tokenistic” figures who only appear at assemblies, leading to a loss of momentum and a missed opportunity to impact school culture.

Here are five activities that will help address this action gap and build momentum to carry them through this year.

1. Hold a ‘Walk-and-Talk’ Audit

Instead of sitting in a classroom, take your leaders on a walk around the school grounds.

Task them with identifying three “low-hanging fruit” improvements—perhaps a lonely corner of the playground that needs a “buddy bench” or a high-traffic area that needs better signage.

• This gives them immediate, visible projects to own.

2. The ‘Minute-to-Win-It’ Assembly Takeover

Break the ice early in the year.

Have the student leaders design and host a 5-minute interactive game or simil;ar activity during the first whole-school assembly.

• It moves them from “script readers” to “culture builders” and builds an immediate rapport with the younger students.

3. Start the Prep/Foundation Partnership

Assign each leader a specific “Prep/Foundation Buddy” class.

Their role in Term 1 isn’t just to play; it’s to facilitate.

They can lead a simple “How to use the library” tour or help the new students navigate the canteen.

• This establishes them as helpers rather than just authority figures.

4. Create a Leadership Vision Board

Have the team create a large, visual “Manifesto” for the school year. What is the one word they want 2026 to be remembered for? (e.g., Inclusion, Energy, or Creativity). (Young Leaders Schools can revisit the activities in the Induction Program to assist)

• Display the Leadership Vision Board in a high-traffic area, so the whole school knows what the leaders are working toward.

5. Pitch to the Principal

Schedule a formal 15-minute meeting where the leaders must present one “Big Idea” for the year to the Principal.

• This teaches them how to advocate for their peers and understand the “why” behind school decisions, bridging the gap between student voice and school management.

Finally…….

By implementing these activities, you help student leaders move beyond the badge to become active culture-shapers.

Whether you trial these specific ideas or develop your own unique initiatives, the most important thing is to make a start.

Taking that first step in Term 1 bridges the action gap, ensuring your leaders build momentum and make a meaningful impact.

The election speeches are done.

The votes are in and counted. Your school captains, house captains, and other leaders have been chosen. They’re excited. So are their parents.

They’re ready to be let loose on their fellow students.

Or are they?

As one principal said, referring to his new student leadership team, “They’ve been elected captains, and they think they know a lot. But they don’t know what they don’t know.”

So true.

That’s why you MUST have an Orientation or Induction Program for your student leadership team.

(NOTE: At Young Leaders, we refer to it as an Induction Program as we believe it should do more than ‘orientate’ students towards their position.)

Induction Programs are no longer nice to do. They’re must-haves in every school!

And not just any old Induction Program will do.

The most successful Induction Programs cover these essentials:

1. Presentation Skills

Communication is a cornerstone skill that all student leaders should develop. Your Induction Program should focus on presentation skills.

Best practice Induction Programs teach students a method that they can use in all their presentation activities throughout the year.

Young Leaders uses the Easy Talk Planner, a tried-and-true method students can apply to any speaking situation.

2. Developing Leadership Mindsets.

One of the most crucial elements in leadership development is cultivating a leadership mindset. Encourage students to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to avoid.

Emphasize the importance of listening to others and understanding different perspectives. This fosters empathy and communication, which are both important leadership traits.

Build a list of leadership skills and behaviours and contrast those with individuals’ skills and behaviours. This will help them understand not only what leadership looks like but also how they should think as leaders.

3. Understanding Their Roles.

Every student gets excited about being a leader, but how many understand what they must do?

Your best-practice student leadership Induction Program should help students understand their role inside and out, which builds confidence and agency.

If you don’t have role descriptions, consider asking former student leaders to draft them for their positions with your help.

4. Forming A Supportive Team.

Your school leaders will work best if they feel part of a team.

Feeling part of a team relieves anxiety and acts as a pressure valve when expectations begin to build and they don’t feel they can cope. When they experience teamwork they are more able to promote it in their roles as leaders.

So, when planning your Induction Program, include team-building activities and games to help students forge strong bonds with fellow leaders.

5. Knowing Their Strengths And Passions.

Your leadership team will consist of many personalities. You’ll have quiet, calm, extroverted, and sporty kids.

So, one leadership size doesn’t fit all.

It helps if students understand their strengths and values well so they can bring these to the fore in their roles.

When planning your Induction Program, I recommend including a self-knowledge activity to help students understand their strengths. The Young Leaders Program uses role-modelling exercises to build student self-awareness.

6. Deciding Their Legacy.

Leaders leave a legacy for others to follow.

This is a concept that kids can easily grasp, but many adult leaders forget to include it in their Induction Programs.

Introduce the idea of leaving a legacy during the student leadership Induction Program as a point of reference that you and they can refer to throughout the year.

NOTE: The Young Leaders Programs use the footprint method to help students consider their legacy.

7. Introducing Mentoring

Mentoring accelerates leadership learning. It’s a powerful way to develop the skills and capabilities kids need to lead, and a great way to provide students with support throughout their leadership journey.

In your Induction Program, introduce mentoring.

Start the process by asking students to find a mentor either within or outside school. Consider what a good mentor looks and sounds like and how students should feel when they are with their mentor.

After an Induction Program, students should identify their mentors and know how to approach them. Better still, they will have their mentor in place.

A final word…or two

Kick off the leadership year with a world-class Induction Program. Keep your expectations high, and your students will likely meet them.

Dedicate at least 5 hours over at least two sessions to your Induction Program. If you are able, devote more time and sessions.

The energy and effort you devote to your Induction Program will pay handsome dividends in terms of leadership output, agency, and the culture established over the school year.

This week, I’ll show you how to ignite the spark of leadership in the younger students who will take on leadership roles next year.

The key is to focus on broad-based development, ensuring a wider pool of empowered students ready to vie for leadership.

Here’s how:

1. Explicitly Teach Leadership to Senior Students

This involves a series of classroom sessions about leadership, as well as the explicit teaching of each element of your school’s leadership framework to students.

Students should know:

• What constitutes a good student leader.

• Each element of your leadership framework.

• How the election/selection process works.

2. Engage in Skill-Building

Many Young Leaders schools implement the Young Leaders program for Year 5 students this term.

This involves workshops and public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

Place a special focus on presentation skills and team-building activities as team challenges, like building a tower with limited materials or a "blindfolded fetch" game to practice communication and trust.

3. Use "Shadowing" Opportunities

Allow Year 5 students (or students in the second last year of primary school) to "shadow" the current student leaders.

They can assist with running assemblies, helping with sporting events, or attending a school council meeting as an observer.

This hands-on experience demystifies the leadership roles and provides practical learning in a supportive environment.

Shadowing builds a leadership bridge from the current leaders to the next group.

4. Create Peer-Led Initiatives

There’s nothing like dipping your toes in the water to get the feel for what’s ahead.

Encourage incoming leaders to take on small, visible responsibilities in the final weeks of the year.

This could be as simple as leading a lunchtime activity for younger students, organising a "fun day," or spearheading a recycling or "nude food"(food packed in reusable containers) campaign.

These low-stakes opportunities allow them to practise leadership skills in a supportive environment before the new school year begins.

5. Introduce Collaborative Problem-Solving Challenges

Present the incoming leaders with hypothetical school-related challenges and have them work in teams to propose solutions.

For example, "How would you improve the school playground?" or "What's a new way to celebrate Harmony Day?"

Stuck for ideas?

Ask the students. They won’t be short on ideas!

This activity encourages creative thinking, teamwork, and a sense of ownership over school issues.

Finally…..

By dedicating Term 4 to both celebrating current leaders and developing future ones, Australian primary schools can build a robust and sustainable leadership culture.

It creates a seamless transition that not only honours the legacy of the outgoing students but also instils confidence and a sense of purpose in the incoming cohort.

This approach ensures that leadership is seen not as a single title or role, but as a continuous journey of growth, service, and positive influence, shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Building a strong pipeline of future leaders goes beyond simply identifying talented individuals; it involves creating a comprehensive ecosystem that nurtures potential at every turn.

From providing informal "leadership taster" activities for younger students to offering explicit lessons on core leadership qualities, and even establishing dedicated "Young Leaders" workshops, schools have a unique opportunity to cultivate a new generation of confident and capable individuals.

When coupled with active encouragement to participate in extra-curricular activities that naturally foster leadership, this multi-faceted approach ensures that students are not just told about leadership, but are actively empowered to experience, practice, and embody it.

1. "Leadership Taster" Activities for Younger Grades

Introduce informal leadership opportunities and activities to younger students (e.g., Year 3-5). This could involve leading a small group activity, serving as a "classroom helper" for a day, or presenting a brief report to the class.

This broadens the pool of potential leaders by exposing more students to the concept of leadership early on, helping them build confidence and identify their strengths in a low-pressure environment.

• Integrate these opportunities into daily classroom routines and encourage teachers to rotate roles among students.

2. Explicit Teaching of Leadership Qualities

Incorporate explicit lessons or discussions about key leadership qualities (e.g., responsibility, empathy, communication, problem-solving, integrity, teamwork) into the curriculum, particularly for students in Years 4-5.

Many students don't inherently understand what makes a good leader. Explicit teaching provides them with the vocabulary and framework to develop these essential skills.

• Use age-appropriate stories, scenarios, and group activities to explore these qualities. Relate them to real-life situations within the school.

3. Shadowing Opportunities

Allow prospective leaders to "shadow" current student leaders for a short period during their duties (e.g., helping with assembly setup, observing a SRC meeting, assisting with playground duty).

This provides valuable insight into the responsibilities of a student leader, allowing them to learn directly from observing positive role models.

• Schedule specific times and tasks for prospective leaders to observe and assist, with clear guidelines for both current and future leaders.

4. Young Leaders Workshops/Clubs

Establish an optional "Young Leaders" club or run a series of workshops for interested students in the middle primary years.

This provides a dedicated space for students to explore leadership concepts, practice skills, and connect with peers who also aspire to leadership roles.

• Run weekly or fortnightly sessions focused on leadership games, discussions, and small-scale projects they can undertake within the school or classroom.

  5. Encourage Participation in Extra-Curricular Activities

Actively promote participation in activities like the Student Representative Council (SRC), environmental groups, library monitors, sports teams, debating clubs, or school performances.

These activities naturally foster teamwork, communication, and responsibility —essential qualities for leadership roles. They enable students to demonstrate budding leadership in various contexts.

Highlight the leadership aspects of these groups during school announcements or class discussions.

• Encourage teachers to identify and suggest students who might benefit from joining.

With term three underway (in the southern hemisphere), it's a prime time to consolidate existing leadership skills and nurture emerging talent for future roles.

In this newsletter, I’ll cover five ways you can support your current student leadership team. (Next newsletter, I’ll focus on five ways to build a pipeline of prospective student leaders.)

Supporting Current Student Leaders

Leadership is a journey of continuous learning and evolution. For our current student leaders, the mid-year presents an ideal opportunity to deepen their capabilities and expand their influence.

The initiatives detailed below are designed to enhance their skills, foster greater independence, and provide the robust support systems necessary for them to excel and truly own their leadership roles.

1. Mid-Year Review and Goal Setting

Conduct individual or small-group meetings with current student leaders to reflect on their achievements, challenges, and contributions so far. (Students in schools with the Young Leaders Program can revisit goals that they set in their Induction Programs.)

This helps them understand their impact, identify areas for growth, and set new, achievable goals for the remainder of the year. It reinforces accountability and provides a sense of purpose.

Use a simple self-assessment or feedback form, and facilitate a discussion about their experiences.

• Encourage them to consider a "legacy" project they'd like to work on for the remainder of the year.

2. Advanced Skills Workshops

Offer targeted workshops on specific leadership skills, such as advanced public speaking, conflict resolution, project management, or effective teamwork.

While they may have had initial training, deepening their skill set empowers them to handle more complex situations and take on greater responsibility.

Bring in an external speaker/facilitator, or have a staff member with expertise in these areas lead the sessions.

• Focus on practical application through role-playing and real-life scenarios.

3. Mentorship and Peer Support

Establish a formal or informal mentorship program where senior staff or even older student leaders (if applicable, e.g., from a buddy program) provide guidance and support. Also, encourage peer-to-peer mentoring among the current leaders.

Mentorship offers a safe space for leaders to discuss challenges, receive guidance, and cultivate confidence. Peer support fosters a collaborative and encouraging leadership team.

Assign a staff mentor to each student leader or small group.

• Facilitate regular check-ins and provide opportunities for leaders to debrief and learn from each other's experiences.

4. Increased Autonomy and Project Ownership

Give current leaders more autonomy in planning and executing school initiatives or projects. Allow them to take ownership of specific areas they are passionate about (e.g., environmental initiatives, fundraising, playground activities).

This demonstrates trust in their abilities, deepens their engagement, and provides invaluable hands-on experience in leading a project from conception to completion.

Offer guidance and resources, but step back and let them lead.

• Be available for support and problem-solving, rather than dictating every step.

Organise a small, meaningful recognition event or feature their work prominently in school newsletters, assemblies, or on a display board.

Acknowledging their efforts and impact reinforces their value to the school community and motivates them to continue their excellent work.

This could be a special morning tea, a photo display highlighting their achievements, or a dedicated segment in an assembly where they share their experiences.

• Public recognition rewards students and promotes leadership.

Finally……

The good news is that supporting your current student leaders doesn't require a complete overhaul of your current practices.

By integrating these five actionable strategies—from strategic goal-setting to public recognition—into your Term Three plans, you can significantly enhance their leadership journey.

Now is the time to build on their foundational skills, offer them greater responsibility, and ensure they feel genuinely valued.

The positive ripple effect of this focused support will be evident not only in their continued growth but also in the dynamic leadership they bring to your school's initiatives.

Every school is raising the bar in this crucial area as teachers understand the importance of leadership development for students, the school culture, and, more significantly, the future of our society.

This year, I’ve selected 25 practical ways to develop leadership in your school's senior students.

Here’s 25 for 25.

1. Create a list of standard leadership terms and phrases for use in the classroom.

   (Shared language fosters change and encourages growth.)

2. Highlight the basics of leadership to students.

   (Explicit teaching fosters leadership literacy - awareness and comprehension of what leadership involves.)

3. Ground leadership development in service to others.

   (Connect the Benefit Mindset to student leadership success.)

4. Run goal-setting lessons or workshops.

   (The strength of goal-setting lies in the system it imparts rather than the outcomes it produces.)

5. Engage in a leadership development game each week.

   (Games aid students in cultivating leadership skills through enjoyment and involvement.) Here’s a list of ten fantastic leadership games for students.

6. Present the Student Leader of the Week.

   (Acknowledge students for exhibiting specific leadership qualities.)

7. Practice presentation skills daily in the classroom.

   (Practise clear, concise communication every day in every possible way.)

8. Establish a mentoring program.

   (Pair senior students with younger students to provide mentoring opportunities. First, educate students about the mentoring process.)

9. Initiate a presentation skills program.

   (During class hours or other times, create a presentation skills program to boost leadership effectiveness.)

10. Establish a debating club.

    (Debating is a fantastic way for students to practise their speaking skills.)

11. Create a student media group. A media crew can contribute in various ways - start a podcast, report at assemblies, and contribute to school newsletters.

12. Establish a student-led club program.

    (A fantastic way to foster organisational skills, teamwork, and forward-thinking)

13. Organise an expedition.

    (Transform a portion of a school camp or bike education program into an expedition that requires specific leadership skills.)

14. Engage in regular team-building activities both in and out of the classroom.

    (Great leaders are also excellent team members, so emphasise collaboration.)

15. Develop community service initiatives.

    (Involve students in service projects that help others while promoting empathy and a sense of responsibility.)

16. Establish an ambassador program. (Teach students how to represent the school and their peers publicly. Ambassadors can also take on a formal leadership role, welcome new students, represent their class or school, and help with regular tasks.)

17. Host a student leadership conference at your school.

    (Invite speakers and students from other schools for an interactive exchange of leadership ideas.)

18. Introduce leadership journaling.

    (Encourage students to reflect on their learning experiences and recognise areas for growth.)

19. Develop a classroom jobs chart.

    (Encourage students to rotate classroom jobs to foster personal responsibility, reliability, and organisational skills.)

20. Encourage student-led class discussions.

    (Facilitate discussions in which students lead and guide the conversations.)

21. Explore leaders through literature.

    (Read and discuss books and tales about inspiring leaders.)

22. Utilise leaders who are currently in the spotlight.

    (Engage in discussions about real-life leaders from various fields of endeavour.)

23. Talk about leaders making headlines.

    (Discuss prominent leaders making headlines to enhance students' understanding of effective and ineffective leadership.)

24. Introduce student-led assemblies.

    (Provide a platform for students to refine their public speaking and organisational skills.)

25. Conduct student leadership workshops.

    (Organise a series of workshops focusing on presentation skills, mentoring, and problem-solving)
